Volunteer opportunities

Dates: Mid-January (MITES Semester / MITES Summer); November/December (MITES Saturdays); July  

Eligibility: Open to all  

Description: Encourage applicants to finish their applications! Scripts and guidance will be provided. You can also volunteer to call and thank MITES fiscal year donors in July. 

 

Dates: December/January  

Eligibility: Program Alum 

Description: Volunteer to visit schools and share your story with prospective students.  

Dates: March/April  

Eligibility Requirements: Program Alum, Current Undergraduate  

Description: Share your advice in a webinar about choosing college. 

Dates: April (MITES Semester and MITES Summer); September-December (MITES Saturdays) 

Eligibility: To be a member of the National Programs Selections Committee, members must have graduated high school on or before May 2018 and must not currently be enrolled in an undergraduate institution. This helps to minimize conflicts of interest in our selections process.  

To be a member of the MITES Saturdays Selections Committee, members must have graduated high school and must not be currently enrolled in an undergraduate institution.  

Application closes early November, we train committee members in the first week of December and they review and submit feedback in early/mid-December.  

Description: The goal of our Selections Committee is to provide recommendations to MITES staff about applications and we would love to have your perspective this year! The overall time commitment for our Selections Committee is 10 to 12 hours.

Date: March  

Eligibility: MITES staff, donor, scholar, parent, alumni, or friend  

Description: Reach out to personal networks in support of the MITES 24-Hour Challenge. This is a fundraising opportunity where messaging for social media, email, and text is provided. 

Date: Ongoing 

Eligibility: Open to all 

Description: Reach out to community members, teachers, and peers in December/January via social media. We will provide you with draft language and additional guidance in the coming weeks.

Date: Ongoing  

Description: Connect MITES with schools and community-based organizations such as churches, nonprofits, community centers, and junior sports leagues. We will share a Google form to submit contact information and invite these organizations to future recruitment events.  

Date: Second Week, September 11–23 

Description: Serve as an interviewer for MITES Semester students. These interviews are in preparation for college admissions applications, and the goal is to help students refine their personal statements and essays. Each reviewing session is about 25 minutes. Reviewers will receive essays at least 24 hours before office hours. We will provide additional guidance during the training session in the fall.  

Date: Fall, Wednesday/Sunday evenings 

Eligibility: Current college students, current graduate students, working professionals  

Description: Share your journey in STEM with MITES Semester students. 

Date: Mid-November before Thanksgiving  

Eligibility: Current college students, current graduate students, working professionals. MITES alumni preferred.  

Description: Speak about your experiences for 10 to 20 minutes during symposium, and participate in a 10 to 15 minute Q&A 

Date: Fall (September to November); Spring (February to May) 

Eligibility: Current college students, current graduate students, working professionals  

Description: Help with off-campus events, classes, setting up lunches, and check-ins.  

Date: Ongoing  

Eligibility: Older MITES alumni  

Description: Provide career and academic mentoring to current students and recent graduates as they navigate career and college decisions. 

Date: Ongoing 

Eligibility: MITES alumni from all programs (formerly E2, MITES, MOSTEC, SEED Academy, STEM) 

Description: Speak to donors about your experience and the impact of MITES.

Date: Ongoing

Description: Speak to students about your work, trajectory in STEM, and experiences.
